S7 is the rating to look for when water is the job, not the weather. Introduced in the 2022 edition of EN ISO 20345, it takes everything in S3, the 200 joule toecap, antistatic build, energy-absorbing heel, penetration-resistant midsole, water-resistant upper and cleated outsole, and adds the WR test, in which the whole boot is checked for water ingress rather than just the upper. Before 2022 the same boot would have been marked S3 WR, so you will still see both descriptions. Groundwork, utilities, agriculture, rail and any winter site work sit here. All of S3 plus WR, whole-boot water resistance. The construction as a whole, seams and tongue included, is tested for water ingress. We list 103 S7 styles ready to order.
The suffix describes the midsole. No suffix is a steel insert; S7S is a non-metallic insert tested with a 3 mm nail; S7L is non-metallic tested with a 4.5 mm nail. Same rating, different midsole material.
They describe the same protection. S3 WR was the 2011 edition's way of marking a whole-boot water-resistant S3; S7 is the 2022 edition's. A boot certified before 2022 may still carry the older marking on its page.
Waterproof membranes, sealed seams and deep-cleated outsoles come as standard in this class. Expect a heavier boot than S3, and expect dry feet at the end of a wet shift.

The decision between S3 and S7 is about how wet the work gets. S3's upper is tested to resist water coming through for a set period, which covers showers and damp ground. S7 tests the whole boot, which covers standing water, saturated ground and days of rain. If your risk assessment or your own experience says wet feet are the norm, S7 is the answer. Many S7 boots add cold insulation (CI) and a heat-resistant outsole (HRO), which the product page lists as additional markings. Waterproof boots run warm, so consider a lighter S3 for summer and an S7 for the rest of the year. Sizing is stated per style; check the size and fit guide before ordering.
