S1P is the workhorse rating for dry, indoor and general trades. It takes the S1 package, a 200 joule toecap with an antistatic, energy-absorbing heel, and adds a penetration-resistant midsole that shields the sole against nails and sharp debris. What it does not add is a water-resistant upper, which is why S1P styles run lighter and more breathable than S3, and why they suit warehouse, logistics, engineering and workshop floors. Ratings are stated per style, across shoes, trainers and boots, in both composite and steel toe.
S1P builds on S1: a 200 joule protective toecap, an antistatic build and an energy-absorbing heel, plus a penetration-resistant midsole against nails and sharp objects underfoot. Both meet the same 200 joule impact and compression test. Composite is lighter, warmer underfoot and passes cleanly through metal detectors, which suits airports, logistics and food work, while steel is hard-wearing and keeps the cost down. The choice is about weight, temperature and site rules, not protection level.

The S-rating ladder under EN ISO 20345 is cumulative. S1 gives a 200 joule toecap with an antistatic, energy-absorbing heel. S1P adds a penetration-resistant midsole. S3 goes further again, adding a water-resistant upper and a cleated outsole. That makes S1P the right call for dry, indoor and general work where puncture protection matters but you are not standing in water: engineering, warehousing, logistics, manufacturing and most workshop trades.
