S4 is the wellington equivalent of S1. The boot is moulded in one piece from rubber or a polymer such as PU or PVC, so it is waterproof by construction rather than by test, and it carries a 200 joule toecap, an antistatic build and an energy-absorbing heel. What it does not carry is a penetration-resistant midsole, which is the one thing that separates it from S5. That makes S4 right for food processing, dairies, fish, cleaning and wash-down areas where the floor is wet but nobody is walking over nails. Each style states its own rating on its page.

S5 adds a penetration-resistant midsole and a cleated outsole. If the floor could hide anything sharp, choose S5. If it is a clean wet floor, S4 is lighter and often cheaper.
PU and PVC S4 boots are easy to wash down and resist fats, oils and mild chemicals, which is why they are the standard issue in food and drink production.
PU wellingtons are markedly lighter and warmer than rubber; rubber gives more flexibility and grip in cold. The product page states the material.

Wellingtons under EN ISO 20345 have their own two-rung ladder: S4 without a midsole and S5 with one. Both are waterproof because they are moulded, so the choice is entirely about what is underfoot. Our ratings guide explains both alongside the shoe and boot ratings.
